Della Reese replaces Marcia Strassman
22 June 2016 | by See all my reviews

"The Gang Show" featured Della Reese as a new teacher, Jean Tremaine, whose only other appearance is in the next episode, "Come Back Little Arnold." Mrs. Tremaine wants to call off this year's talent contest because she doesn't think the kids have enough time to do a good job (last year's winner chewed up crayons and spit out a beautiful painting). Carvelli boasts that he's a cinch to win, even befriending the judges so that he'll have a bigger edge. Horshack and Beau manage to get themselves appointed alternate judges, but it's not enough to approve of the awful mind reading act concocted by Epstein and Washington, calling themselves Medium and Rare. Carvelli surprises everyone with his guitar playing, bluesy harmonica riff and rap lyrics. The big surprise is that Horshack and Beau each voted for Carvelli, while the only vote for Medium and Rare came from Carvelli's sidekick Murray! With Della Reese as the resident teacher, this was a rare episode in which Marcia Strassman doesn't appear, along with Gabe Kaplan and John Travolta.
