Did You Know?
John Senior has Jim-Bob wear his high school football helmet in the race. Since John Sr. graduated before his stint in the Army in 1917 this is highly suspect. The helmet does resemble those first in use in the 1900's they were not widely used at all until the late 1930's. Most players before 1920 wore no helmet at all, pro's, colleges, and certainly not high schools. See more
The three prizes for the race are announced and written on a chalkboard at the race track. Jim-Bob comes in fourth. Yet the narrator states that Jim-Bob won a box of candy, which was the third prize. See more

With each passing year of the 1930's we reached out for the hope that times were getting better, and that the Depression which had marked our lives was fading. But in hard truth, things remained much the same. There were changes, though, in our family. We didn't seem much different to each other until something would happen that made us look and see that time was surely changing us.
