He is actually reading the final scene from the film "Spencer's Mountain," which was also penned by "Waltons" writer Earl Hamner Jr. In fact, the oldest son in "Spencer's Mountain," on which the Walton series is based, is named Clayboy. So it was in 1937 when it came time for my sister, Erin, to leave behind the security of high school and to face an uncertain future.
