Storyline

People on the train are hungry and one of the men shoots a buffalo against the wishes of Adams who has an agreement with the local Chief, White Eagle. Adams forces the man to bury the buffalo and puts him in chains. Flint returns with permission to kill five buffalo from White Eagle. However, Adams against the advise of Flint keeps the man in chains. Flint quits the train and finds a job as Sheriff in the nearby Tent City owned by Will Hardisty. One of White Eagle's braves see the buffalo buried and reports it to White Eagle. White Eagle understands Adams did not break their treaty but wants the man to punish by death but Hawks refuses. A second man from Tent City kills a deer and is arrested by Flint. White Eagle confronts the Major and Hardisty wanting the two men so he can punish them. Flint suggests he and White Eagle settle the argument the Indian way - a fight to the death. Written by Anonymous

Provoking the Indians
14 April 2013 | by (Buffalo, New York) – See all my reviews

This Wagon Train episode has Ward Bond and Robert Horton having a major fallout over a decision that Major Adams made to chain up one of the Wagon Train passengers for killing a buffalo. During a certain portion of the trip Major Adams has given an edict to not do any hunting less they provoke the Indians. The Indians do get provoked however.

The net result being that Flint McCullough gets the sack as scout and moves to Tent City where Wayne Morris has set up a nice establishment with girl Friday Audrey Totter. Morris needs a sheriff and Horton looks like a good man for the job.

Eventually the Indians threaten both the train and Tent City and the lack of food for the white settlers becomes an issue.

Not one of the better episodes. Ward Bond and Robert Horton come across two petulant kids more than anything else. Reportedly Bond and Horton didn't get along in real life so the scenes have a bit of bite to them.

But Wagon Train fans will approve.
