When children's dolls are found mutilated in her possession, passengers believe that Sara Proctor is either deranged or practicing witchcraft. Hale slowly arrives at the real story after Sara confides to him and Charlie's snooping.

Members of the wagon train are becoming more and more nervous about Sara Proctor. They keep catching her with the broken dolls owned by the various children of the wagon train. She is with her adult son Brad who is concerned that the wagon train may ask them to leave if this continues but so far Chris has been willing to let them stay with the train. Some people are becoming scared of her thinking she is dangerous while others think she is practicing some strange religion. The issue has Chris distracted and irritable with the crew while Duke has another problem. The Graham family including the very pretty Jenny has joined the train. Duke has an interest in her but as he is working and away scouting Brad Proctor has consumed her attention with his wit. Brad buries the dolls his mother has accumulated in a grave but when Charlie tells Chris he snooped in their wagon and found a paper with an article in it, it revives a memory in Chris who returns to inspect the dolls and is followed by ...
