Looking forward to some time off, Flint heads towards the town of Monument but runs into an old man and some kids whose parents were just massacred by some Mescaleros and they're running low on supplies especially milk for the baby.

Storyline

Flint is on the way to Monument to rest when he stops for water and encounters a partially blind old man and his three grandchildren including a baby. The parents were killed by Mescalero Indians. While looking for supplies Flint finds an older sister in shock. An Indian pony arrives with a dead Indian giving them an additional horse. With no milk for the baby the grandfather prays to god and a young boy arrives asking for help to milk his goat. Later Flint finds a young Shawnee boy who is lost named Sweeney. The other kids reject him but after Flint berates them for their attitude the three boys become friends. The fort Flint heads for is abandoned and Flint is hit with measles from the kids. They kill a Mescalero brave, take his horse, and leave the fort. They run into a small army patrol and the leader berates Flint for his "rookie" mistakes not realizing what Flint was up against. Sweeney is reunited with a padre looking for him and the rest join the wagon train. Written by ananymous

Flint McCullough gets adopted
28 September 2013 | by (Buffalo, New York) – See all my reviews

Robert Horton takes center stage in one of those episodes aired and probably filmed after the death of Ward Bond when the producers were searching for a new wagonmaster. While away from the Wagon Train, Horton comes across a family of children with their grandfather Henry Hull just getting over the murders of the parents during an attack by the Mescelero Apaches.

Sometimes situations just present themselves and Horton has a mission to get this family to safety. The kids even adopt them as a substitute father. Along the way they pick up another kid who lost his family, but has a needed goat to give milk for the infant they have.

Horton takes his fatherly responsibilities seriously and gives them a fatherly lecture when a young Shoshoni missionary Indian kid crosses their path. In the end the bonds of Kiddom prove stronger than hate for the Indians who killed their folks.

Definitely a top drawer Wagon Train episode that's great family viewing and Robert Horton truly shines in this one.
