As we learned in an episode in an earlier season Flint McCullough was an orphan kid who was raised by legendary mountain man Jim Bridger. In one of the few episodes of the series where a real frontier figure was used, it befalls Jim Bridger to ask Flint McCullough for help to rescue some trapped soldiers.
What Bridger asks for General John Doucette demands as he commandeers the Train and drafts the settlers into the army. Naturally that does not sit well with Robert Horton.
This was one of the most far out episodes of the series and can't get a truly good rating from me. Karl Swenson plays Bridger and does well in the part. But I don't think any martinet general would try something like this.

The other comments about this episode, in my opinion, are totally correct. It would have been a treat to have a story about Flint's foster father which had some true relation to reality.
Outside of war, the government (and definitely not the Army) has no authority to seize private property or kidnap citizens. Not just unauthorized--it was criminal. In addition to this fact are the multiple other illogical factors in the plot.
What is a mystery is why the General was not depicted as having a major delusion. Or maybe the story was all a fever dream Flint was having one night. Other than a UFO arriving this could hardly get more unbelievable.
