Robinson Crusoe in the mountains
20 September 2013 | by (Buffalo, New York) – See all my reviews

Daniel Defoe's classic Robinson Crusoe is the basis for part of the plot of this Wagon Train episode. Dick York, the future Darren Stevens is an unlikely, but good choice to play the part of the Indian companion to Denny Miller.

John McIntire takes a group of settlers over a mountain pass so he can get to an inheritance claim on a gold mine. That's a story unto itself. But Denny Miller who goes with McIntire breaks an ankle on the trip and he's left in a mountain cabin built for stranded trappers.

It's there that a crippled Miller forms as unlikely friendship with a stranded Bannock Indian who speaks no English. He christens him Charley Shutup and the two become as unlikely a pair of friends as Crusoe and his man Friday.

With no dialog other than grunts and Indian words, Dick York does a fine job in a role as different as advertising executive Darren Stevens could be. This is a good one and an unusual one for Wagon Train.
