Double tragedy
20 February 2018 | by See all my reviews

Katharine Ross whose stardom still awaited gives a stunning performance in the title role in this Wagon Train story. Ross is a woman who gets handed a double tragedy while the Wagon Train stops for supplies.

She's pregnant and it looks like that she and her husband will have to halt their trip because she is pregnant and it looks to be difficult. Remember this was in a day when infant survival was a chancy thing, she will need money for a hospital delivery. That was also a luxury, see the classic film A Tree Grows In Brooklyn for that subject.

Anyway James Davidson the husband gets turned down by banker Robert Emhardt who has a sideline as a fence. He sees another passenger Lee Phillips getting money and Phillips has been trying to move in on Ross. When he goes berserk and steals the money, Emhardt shoots him down in the street, quite legally but unnecessarily. The shock causes her to lose the baby as well.

Anyway Ross is both frightening and haunting as a woman dealing with grief and it's overwhelming her. She becomes borderline psychotoc and Phillips decides to take advantage of that.

All the regulars take a backseat to what Katherine Ross does in this episode. No doubt stardom was in her future.
