- The Perez family lives in a village that combines the old pagan beliefs of the Indians with the modern Christian beliefs. Members of their village believe their teenage daughter Juana is a witch so the family packs up and leaves the village before harm can come to her. When their wagon breaks down with three broken wheels and they are lost, the father Esteban finds the Hale wagon train and flags them down for help and food. The wagon train is about two days from Medicine Lance where they will stop for supplies. Charlie Wooster is looking forward to seeing Ma Sikes who he says is a better cook than even him. The town has an excellent doctor, Adam MacKenzie, who has two young protégés studying under him. Due to a recent diphtheria outbreak they are checking all strangers before they enter town so the three of them ride out to the wagon train to check all the members. The younger assistant, Henry 'Wild Horse' Adams, being an Indian runs into some resistance. Meanwhile, Felipe Perez, was cut on the leg by a Lynx who walked into camp. He thinks it was his sister who transformed herself. The parents are afraid to let the doctors treat Felipe whose leg becomes infected as it might offend the gods.—Anonymous
