- Herb Tarlek: Hey Bailey, I need to get your advice on something.
- Bailey Quarters: Is it about your suit?
- Herb Tarlek: Nope.
- Bailey Quarters: I'm sorry.
- Les Nessman: [on the air] The Presidential campaign heats up as Farmer Kennedy coffee clache concludes clash concerning Kansas convention caucus. But in Butte, Bush, Biggar and Brown blast bountiful big business boom. I'll be right back after these mief bressages.
- Jennifer Marlowe: Well, I heard it from Les.
- Bailey Quarters: Well, I heard it from the cleaning woman.
- Jennifer Marlowe: Les dates the cleaning woman.
- Venus Flytrap: So when do I see the other deejays?
- Jason Realli: Deejays?
- [begins to laugh]
- Jason Realli: There's been a couple of changes there, too. It's top secret stuff... we haven't even told the trades yet. See,, Venus,
- [puts his hand on Venus' shoulder]
- Jason Realli: we... are automated! Just like NASA... first class across the board! Amanda, honey... why don't you let Venus see Max?
- Amanda Dean: Sure.
- [she raises volume on Max and opens screen, revealing large broadcast automation system, playing "The Same Thing" by Sly and the Family Stone]
- Jason Realli: It's just like the Wizard of Oz...
- [laughs]
- Jason Realli: Max is our disc jockey! 24 hours a day, plays all our music! You see, with you on the air every night, people will still think we're live. Amanda, honey, could you turn off...
- [she closes screen and lowers volume]
- Jason Realli: Venus, there are already over 1500 automated stations in the country. Do you realize that if you buy your news from a national service, you could run an entire station with no people? No people, think of that one!
- [laughs, then gazes into space for a moment, as if realizing he too could be put out of work]
- Jason Realli: It's an ugly thought, but... think of it.
- Venus Flytrap: [dejected] So what do I do around here?
- Jason Realli: Not much. I mean the music is programmed out of New York, so all you have to do is go out and tape a couple of things, interviews and so on, so people will think it's still coming out of Cincinnati... and that's about it, it's perfect.
- Herb Tarlek: Did you hear about my job offer?
- Venus Flytrap: No... you got a job offer?
- Herb Tarlek: Oh yeah... television station. Boy, I marched right in to the Big Guy's office, you know, think that maybe he'd try to top it. But he didn't. He just congratulated me, and hugged me, and possibly even kissed me... I don't know. He told me how proud he was of me and said 'I'm gonna give you a BIG going away party."
- Venus Flytrap: Sounds great, Herb.
- Herb Tarlek: Yeah. Except that I wasn't quite honest with the Big Guy.
- Venus Flytrap: You lied about the money?
- Herb Tarlek: No... I lied about the job. There was no offer.
- Venus Flytrap: [dismayed] Oh, Herb.
- Herb Tarlek: [slams his briefcase shut, upset] Well hell, I thought maybe I could get a raise! You know? They were ready to offer YOU more money, but all I get out of it is...
- [checks himself]
- Herb Tarlek: I'm sorry... I'm, I'm sorry. It just didn't work out at all.
- Venus Flytrap: What're you gonna do, Herb?
- Herb Tarlek: [sighs] I don't know.
- Venus Flytrap: Tell 'em the truth, man.
- Herb Tarlek: Oh no, no sir. Can't do that... everybody'd laugh at me... then they'd know what a real liar I am. No sir, can't do it.
- [turns to leave]
- Herb Tarlek: You know, the funny part about it is, I... I can't even tell my wife.
- Venus Flytrap: So where you going, man?
- Herb Tarlek: I don't know... home, I guess.
- Andy Travis: [awkwardly to Venus, about his meeting with WREQ] So tell me, how was lunch?
- Venus Flytrap: Oh, uh... good. Very good. It was... interesting.
- Andy Travis: How much?
- Venus Flytrap: $35,000.
- Andy Travis: [Andy sighs and lowers his head, frustrated] Well, you know we can't top that.
- Bailey Quarters: [to Venus] What do you wanna be a Program Director for? Venus, you are the best deejay in the whole wide world!
- [as Johnny looks at her askew:]
- Bailey Quarters: One of the best.
- [chuckles]
- Bailey Quarters: The best nighttime deejay.
- [Johnny walks off]
- Bailey Quarters: [to Venus] Besides, Program Directors do nothing, they just sit on their duffs.
- [as Andy comes out the door:]
- Bailey Quarters: Most Program Directors. Not all! Not Andy Travis here, for instance. No sir! A very important job.
- [obsequious laugh]
- Bailey Quarters: You know what? I should leave. That is a very good idea. I'm leaving now.
