A bit talky...but not that bad.
planktonrules5 October 2017
I noticed another reviewer said this episode was the worst episode. Well, while I agree that it's not a very good one, I certainly can think of several episodes that were worse--where the Seaview fought giant jellyfish or aliens or other really fantastic situations. But, the episode is still a weak one...mostly because it had enough material for perhaps half an episode.

When the show begins, the leader of 'The Peoples Republic' (Ed Asner) is about to be shot. However, the deposed leader's supporters rescue him and he goes into hiding. Soon Admiral Nelson is called to sneak into the never named country and rescue the man because he wants to defect and bring the USA some valuable secrets. Soon, however, it becomes obvious the guy is just a vicious scum- bag.

In many ways, Brynov (Asner) seems to be modeled after Nikita Khrushchev. After all, in 1964 he was deposed and Asner bore some physical resemblance to the guy...and Khrushchev was a man who destroyed a lot of people on his way to the top. But even with a nice performance by Asner, the episode went on too long...and was kept going on longer when Nelson just inexplicably sat back and let Brynov kill people. An odd episode...not great but not bad either.

Another Dictador of People's Republic!!!
elo-equipamentos22 November 2017
Irwin Allen had a deep hassle over non democratic countries, without nominate them, so he finds a clever way to call them as People's Republic, of course he manages it straight to old URSS, several episodes were around this country, this turn once more Seaview's crew were in danger to receive a Dictador with second intentions to United States, but after the meeting at Dictador's vessel which is bombed and destroyed by a unknown traitor Admiral Nelson stays drift at lifeboat with a Dictator's crew until remains Nelson and the Dictator only!!!

Lifeboat adventure for Dick Basehart and Eddy Asner
searchanddestroy-12 April 2016
I am surprised that this episode has not been commented yet. That's the first I do for this series. The most interesting is that doesn't take place in the submarine, the Seaview, but on a lifeboat. So, it's a sort of surviving tale, that may you think of Alfred Hitchcock's LIFE BOAT, or Richard Sale's ABANDON SHIP. But it remains a spy tale at the start, with Ed Asner as a very bad and interesting character, I assure you. Good character study, and in a lifeboat, character study is most the time interesting, isn't it? But the more I will remember is, I repeat, Ed Asner's performance in this strange and unpredictable spy adventure surviving story, which I would have better seen for the big screen industry instead the TV one. Directed by James Goldstone, who made many episodes for this series.

My Vote As The Worst Episode Of Voyage
StuOz16 November 2016
Nelson does deadly dealings that lead to him being stuck on a life raft.

My vote as the worst episode of Voyage. I can hear 100 others saying "but what about The Terrible Leprechaun or The Lobster Man?" They are not the worst. Leprechaun was silly but a lot of fun. The Lobster Man had a stupid costume given to the titled character but other than that, it was fine.

The Exile is boring to the point that it is hard to focus on the dialogue because it is acted/scripted in such a tedious way.

And what does all this have to do with Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea? This is a remake of Hitchcock's Lifeboat film! What is it doing here??

The first rule to scripting a drama about people stuck in a confined space for the whole show is make at least one character likable, The Exile ignores that rule.

If you get a buzz out of watching old men speak in funny accents, you might like this, if not, stay clear of this sometimes un-watchable turkey!
