Tom Brant returns to Medicine Bow after 35 years in prison as an old broken man. His exploits have been expanded into mythic portions over the years first in a book and now by a St. Louis Courier reporter Ira Lom. He was involved in a shootout in the Medicine Bow saloon immortalized in a painting and retold by the bartender. Tom hopes to see his daughter Sarah Tedler who he has never met. She was raised by strangers and now married with a daughter and sick son. She has lived with the reputation of being an outlaw's daughter which has affected her and her family emotionally. Others including Sarah and the grandson of one of Tom's outlaw friends who Tom killed believe Tom has money hidden that they want. Amos Coe the brother of a man Tom killed is an important man in Medicine Bow. Amos was held up by Tom and his gang before he went to prison. Amos now wants revenge. Others including several gunmen arrive in Medicine Bow hoping to take advantage of his legend and the money they believe he hid before going to prison. Tom wants to see his daughter and grandkids but finds the family afraid to handle its own problems. His reaction to all the requests leads to surprises for all.
