- Easterner Scott Austin is sent to Shiloh for the summer as a favor to his wealthy father who is a friend of Clay. The hope is that Scott will develop character. With Clay gone the job falls to The Virginian who has his hands full.
- Clay Grainger sends a letter to The Virginian to take on a new hand, Scott Austin, while Clay is in Denver. Scott is the spoiled son of a wealthy self made man who is hoping a summer working at Shiloh will make him a responsible person. Scott makes a less than flattering entrance when he arrives at Shiloh drunk. After being sobered up by The Virginian and Trampas, he joins the hands for lunch where he gets his next lesson when he doesn't realize the other hands are not there to wait on him. Ranch hand Morgan dumps a pot of beans in his lap and becomes Scott's nemesis during his stay. Scott's primary interest is in romancing Elizabeth who befriends him. Scott is insecure and decides to leave after several incidents including one involving the thoroughbred colt belonging to Elizabeth which he lets drown in a swamp while he sleeps after being told to explicitly watch them by The Virginian. The Virginain goes after Scott and tries a scheme to change Scott but it has unintended consequences for both of them.—Anonymous
