Warden Keane asks Clay Grainger to take three convicts as employees while on parole. He is trying to persuade the prison board that parole might rehabilitate some convicts with greater success. Grainger presents the three men to The Virginian who normally handles the hiring with no choice. The three are obvious misfits to everyone with no training. Dan Moss who was involved in horse rustling takes an interest in Elizabeth's mare Fancy Pants who is about to foal. She learns he had studied with a vet until he died. Unknown to Grainger a marshal has been assigned to work undercover at Shiloh to report on problems. When he exposes the men as convicts after Dick announces his watch is missing, it complicates the work environment and the three men have differing views on their future plans. Tussey wants to rustle some cattle and head for Canada so he hooks up with another ex-con Kyle Spanner he meets in Medicine Bow. Moss, however, begins to feel at home especially after he helps the mare with a breech birth.
