Major James Carlton and his wife Nora make a surprise visit to the Graingers. Nora knew Clay in New Orleans three years before he met Holly and is consumed with impressing people with her social status. Nora is pressing her husband to improve his status by military promotions which she feels have come too slow. While visiting, Holly and Nora are taken prisoner by Comanches who have left the reservation and are being tracked by the Army. The Army captures their leader Nakona who they believe murdered a soldier. When the attempted trade of Nakona for the women is foiled, the women are kept by the tribe. Holly and Nora help a sick Indian baby who is the son of Nakona. The mother proves to them another brave killed the soldier who is then killed by the Indians. Grey Feather, the baby's grandfather, agrees to let the women leave with the baby and its mother when they promise to tell the Major the truth about Nakona and get a doctor for the baby.
