17 minutes into this episode, I was wishing it would just end. 4 or 5 stars for that first half, which is mere time-filler. To be fair, this is all most people require of TV: something amusing to pass the evening, maybe because there isn't anything really to talk about except argue and who wants to do that, so see what's on telly.
But the second half kicks in with a fresh idea that transforms the characters and their relationships, and is genuinely memorable: building on what's happened before, but also opening up new possibilities. Consequently this the standout (and arguably the only really good) episode of the third season -- although by now, the post-credits jokes have us more sympathetic to Alice than the vicar.
