- Everyone's nerves are frazzled when Lord Southwold dies, Lady Southwold and her companion, Miss Hodges, spend a some time with Richard and Lady Marjorie and a valuable diamond brooch goes missing.
- Lady Marjorie's father Lord Southwold has died and her mother, Lady Southwold, comes to stay at 165 Eaton Place with her companion Miss Hodges. Something of a crisis erupts when Lady Southwold's butterfly brooch is nowhere to be found. Hodges reports that she had seen Miss Roberts just outside Lady Southwold's room and Richard Bellamy orders Hudson to question all of the servants before calling in the police. It's a disagreeable task and Miss Roberts is horrified at the mere suggestion that she is under suspicion. Hudson for his part is suspicious of Watkins when he learns that he recently had a visitor to his quarters in the mews. When Watkins refuses to tell him the identity of the visitor or explain why he was there, he reports it to Mr. Bellamy. When the mystery of the missing brooch turns out to be nothing more than a misunderstanding, ill-feeling lingers.—garykmcd
- Lady Southwold and her imperious companion, Miss Hodges, come directly to Eaton Place from Westminster Abbey, where a memorial service was held for the late Lord Southwold. Miss Hodges spots Roberts outside Lady Southwold's bedroom and demands of her what she is doing. The two women exchange some sharp words and Roberts goes off in a snit. Later that evening, as she is dressing for dinner, Lady Southwold is unable to find a diamond brooch she received from her late husband. All are baffled and Hodges tells Richard about Roberts mysterious behavior earlier that day. Richard instructs Hudson to question the staff and Roberts becomes unhinged that anyone would think her possible of theft, knowing full well that Hodges has implicated her. As it happens, Watkins' furtive behavior is not lost on Hudson, so until the brooch is found and in the absence of 'Caesar's wife', no one below stairs is above reproach.—gaelicguy
