Storyline

Although Eliot Ness and the Untouchables managed to destroy the Underground Court, they have yet to make a dent against the Syndicate, which has re-grouped and continues to operate. They elect Nero Rankin to chair the national board of the syndicate, but the choice wasn't unanimous. He's also in poor health and that leads Sylvia Orkins, who loves Rankin and is convinced he will die or be killed, to approach Eliot Ness to do something, anything, to get him out of his new job. Rankin knows he has only about a year to live and that he's an unpopular chairman so he offers Ness a deal: lay off the Syndicate for the year and when he's dead, he'll provide Ness with the Syndicate's books. When Ness turns him down, Rankin decides that there's only one option: fight back. Written by garykmcd

Nero Rankin...a guy whose character just didn't seem to make much sense.
2 March 2016 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

When the show begins, the elderly Nero Rankin is being asked to be the head of the committee running organized crime. But his secretary loves him and so, inexplicably, has decided that the healthiest and best thing for Rankin to do is go to prison. Considering she's worked with him a long time, this is pretty odd.

After the mob realizes this and offs the secretary, it's time for Rankin himself to behave bizarrely. At times, he's sort of an avuncular character and even tries to make nice with Ness. But, inexplicably, when he's rebuffed, he goes all psychotic and orders an all out war against Ness and his Untouchables!! The rest of the committee thinks he's nuts and it's only time until he's out of business.

Any way you look at "The Nero Rankin Story", it's a very weak episode mostly because the writing is all over the place and often is incoherent. So many times characters do things that seem to make little sense...it's just baffling.

By the way, like too many episodes, there is a huge shootout between the Feds and the mobsters...yet none of the agents are killed. In fact, they almost never die or get hit and the kill ratio is about 100 to 1!!
