Storyline

Cooper, Truman and the deputies find new markings discovered by Windom Earle in the form of a large map-like petroglyph. Meanwhile, Windom Earle picks up a heavy metal roadie where he confides in his intentions to find the mysterious Black Lodge, and then kills him as another chess pawn. Leo begins to show disillusionment to Earle over his methods, but is held in check. Catherine shows Pete and Truman the mysterious puzzle box left behind by Thomas Eckhardt and upon opening it, reveals another box inside it. As the town prepares for the annual Miss Twin Peaks Beauty Pagent, the conniving Lana Budding Milford enters as a contestant and persuades the elderly and senile Mayor Milford, who's one of the judges, to vote in her favor. Elsewhere, Cooper continues dating Annie, unaware that Windom Earle knows about their newfound romance. Cooper finally learns about the love poem that Shelly, Donna, and Audrey received from Windom Earle, and correctly concludes that Leo is also working for ...

A pawn is taken

When Cooper and the sheriff's department return to Owl Cave they see the new set of petroglyphs that were exposed by Windom Earle at the end of the previous episode. Cooper doesn't know what they mean but he is convinced that Earle is involved with their appearance and the disappearance of Leo Johnson. Earle meanwhile is explaining about the White and Black lodges to an unnamed man; a man destined to become the next pawn in Earle's murderous game. As the date of the Miss Twin Peaks pageant approaches Billy tries to persuade Shelly to enter and the Mayor's young fiancée tries to persuade him to ensure that she wins. Away from the case Cooper is getting closer to Annie and his boss Gordon Cole is falling for Shelley, the only person who doesn't have to shout to be heard by him.

As the series approaches its conclusion the tension is gradually increasing as we know Windom Earle intends to kill the winner of Miss Twin Peaks and Cooper learns that Earle is playing games with Donna, Audrey and Shelly. His latest murder is done in such a way that is both bizarre, theatrical and leaves no doubt as to his insanity. Kenneth Welsh does a fine job as Earle; managing to keep the character believable despite his actions. The episode wasn't all mystery; there were some good laughs to be had during Dick Tremayne's wine tasting session and an even bigger laugh was to be had when Bobby walks into the diner just as Gordon Cole kissed Shelly! David Lynch is hilarious in the role of Gordon Cole.
