This is the only episode of Twin Peaks (1990) that was directed by co-creator Mark Frost. However, Frost also directed all of the segments of "Invitation to Love" - the soap opera that is often seen on the character's televisions.
Production designer Richard Hoover notes that he saw the pilot for the series at the Telluride Film Festival before becoming involved with the series. During this screening, he noticed Mark Frost's name in the credits and remembered working with his father, Warren Frost. After learning that the production designer for the pilot was no longer available to work, Hoover contacted the younger Frost and inquired about working on the series. Hoover was hired almost immediately. Hoover has pointed out the unusual nature of the series' set designs, most of which feature ceilings and hallways that lead into said sets, which allows characters to be filmed entering a sound stage set without the use of cuts. Hoover felt that the series' use of a consistent palette of reds and earth tones allowed the introduction of strong black elements into set and costume design, citing elements of Blackie O'Reilly's office in One Eyed Jacks as an example, with it's vibrant red curtains and ruddy wood tones offset by her stark black outfit and dark hair. The hues in the footage filmed for the series were "sweetened" in post-production, increasing the saturation of the red tones, which also caused black elements to seem deeper and more striking. This effect was offset by the clothing of several of the law enforcement characters, which had cooler tones and contrasted against the warm palette.
When Twin Peaks was rerun on the Bravo cable network in 1993, David Lynch wrote new introductions for each episode that were performed by Catherine Coulson as The Log Lady. The one for this episode was thus:
"A drunken man walks in a way that is quite impossible for a sober man to imitate, and vice versa. An evil man has a way, no matter how clever. To the trained eye, his way will show itself.
Am I being too secretive? No. One can never answer questions at the wrong moment. Life, like music, has a rhythm. This particular song will end with three sharp sounds, like deathly drumbeats."

The episode is also known as The Last Evening, a title assigned during the run of the series in Germany. Most of the German titles are now used widely by members of the fandom internationally.
This episode opens immediately after the end of Episode 6 still on the night of Thursday, March 2 and proceeds through the night into the wee hours of Friday, March 3.
