Don't blow it for us the ratings are terrific!

***SPOILERS*** As John Sellick, David Naughton, was taking a shave one morning the mirror in his bathroom got loose and what John noticed behind it is a hidden camera. It soon became obvious to John that there's hidden cameras all over John and his wife's Leslie, Susan Roman, house! It's then with what seems like out of nowhere this electrician Archie,Keith Knight, shows up and, after John had disconnected them, reinstalls all the hidden cameras!

John soon finds out from a very reluctant Archie who's job, among other things, is to keep him uniformed to whats happening that he's been the star of the top rated TV show "The Sellicks" for the last five years! And worst of all he's been kept out of the loop or in the dark by his show's producers that he's the star in it! In fact all John has been doing the last five years was just living a normal life without the slightest knowledge that he or his wife Leslie are on TV at all; Much less having the highest rated TV sitcom in the nation!

With the cat now out of the bag John instead of being himself becomes very self conscious in that he's on TV 24 hours a day and watched by millions of fans. This starts to hurt the show's ratings and it's soon canceled because of a sudden drop in the ratings. In fact John who at first wanted nothing at all to do with his top rated, when he first found out about it, show now has seconds thoughts in all the fame money and beautiful women fans throwing themselves at him that went along with him being a top TV star!

***SPOILERS*** That's until the network's CEO Arthur Spence, Elias Zarou, comes up with a better idea in keeping the TV sitcom "The Sellicks" back on the small tube but without him telling a by now very depressed, in all the fame & fortune he's now missing out on, John about it! The New Twilight Zone episode "Special Services" predates by almost ten years the Jim Carrey 1998 blockbuster hit movie comedy "The Truman Show" which had the exact same plot. In Carrey's case his movie ended up making some 125 million dollars in ticket sales but the "New Twilight Zone" episode "Special Services" where the writers of the movie "The Truman Show" very obviously got the idea from is now almost completely forgotten.

I loved The Truman Show, and Special Service was made about more than a decade before...

Warning: Spoilers
The Truman Show is one of my favorite movies and I only yesterday learned about Special Service, an episode from the 1980s revival of The Twilight Zone. As soon as I watched this episode, I thought, "Isn't this like The Truman Show?" although really it was made over a decade before film. The similarities are amazing, a guy (David Naughton, who was the lead in An American Werewolf in London) who is the unwitting star of a reality show which has millions of viewers.

He finds out by accident that he's in a reality show, and then he ponders the nature of his life and so on. I wish the episode went on longer as there were many more themes to explore.

Is Day to Day Life at All Interesting?
Hitchcoc5 July 2017
A man discovers (like in The Truman Show) that he is being covered by cameras every minute of every day and it is being broadcast all over the country. He is offended and works to get his privacy back. The thing is that there are all kinds of people dependent on this show, and there are even groupies who wait patiently to get a glimpse of the stars of the show. What is interesting is that because day to day life isn't always fascinating, there is some tweaking that goes on. That's at the center of what could have been a creative effort. Unfortunately, it's rather mundane and there is little suspense.

Poor writing

Warning: Spoilers
So apparently a guy has been the star of the most popular television show for the past year but he somehow doesn't know it.

Unless he stayed inside his home for the past five years how could he not know? We see women dying to sleep with him but where were they at the past five years, are we to believe they would previously him outside and not try to meet him in person?

Apparently he also has a wife except she's not really his wife. She was hired to pretend to marry him. Also the job he got a few years ago that was all set up by the television show.

Did any of his relatives or friends visit him at his house the past five years? If so you would think they would have had to sign a contract of sorts in agreement to not reveal anything to him right? So for fives years not a single relative or friend clued him in to what was happening?

All of this just isn't believable at all and ranks among the weakest TTZ episodes in my opinion.
