The jacket, pants and the boots of the male soldier's uniform are all of Confederate origin. The swirls up his arm are usually found on Confederate General's uniforms. This was likely a budget saving move, since MGM studios had a large storage of costumes. The female soldier's uniform is supposed to be Russian.
