She's basically a shut-in, never leaving her place with groceries and the like being delivered by a neighborhood boy. The reason she lives like is that she's convinced the personification of death will come and take her away. She's not sure what form death will take and so shuns contact with anyone. When a young policeman is shot just outside her door, she has to decide whether to help him.
