- In the pilot episode of Tracker, we first see a woman at a gas station acting rather strangely. When hit on by a gas station worker, the woman seems oddly interested in the "kill" part of "kill some time."
We switch to another woman trying to arrange a tow for her car, which has mysteriously stopped working. Apparently the nearest gas station is not answering their phone. The credits roll during her conversation.
Next, we cut to a vortex in the sky, which releases a lightning bolt onto a power line. The energy from the bolt follows the power line's tower to the ground, blowing up a tree. We then cut to a first person perspective, moving rapidly through the woods. When a billboard advertising Cole briefs is spotted, a duplicate of the model used in the ad appears.
Still at her car, the woman sees the newly duplicated underwear model staggering down the road towards her. She leaps in her car and closes the doors. When she asks him what he wants, he doesn't seem able to answer. Staggering around the car, he comes to rest atop the engine. A glow passes from his hands to the engine, which then starts.
A tow truck passes by. Inside is the strange woman from the gas station. The man seems to recognize something as the truck passes. He begins to walk after the tow truck, his gait improving steadily as he goes.
The woman with the car, despite her misgivings, stops to give the man a ride. After managing to get him to close the car door, she asks him his name and introduces herself as Mel. Not getting an answer, Mel informs him that she'll give him a lift to Chicago and that's it.
During the ride to Chicago the stranger gets an in-depth analysis of the death of Mel's last relationship. We learn that the stranger doesn't like air conditioning, and he says his first words in response to various items on the radio. As they pass the underwear billboard Mel comments that her passenger "looks an awful lot like that Cole guy."
Next we cut to a bar called the Watchfire, where a sexy blonde is doing a Coyote Ugly routine behind the bar. The phone rings, and it's Mel informing the blonde, Jess, that she's going to be late. Mel has stopped at a convenience store, and the man, in clothes obviously borrowed from Mel, has gone inside. He proceeds to imitate one of the customers.
On the phone we learn that Jess has upgraded a sound system for the Watchfire without Mel's approval. In the store, the stranger is busy observing customers. He then imitates another customer by taking a candy bar and walking out. Chased by the clerk, the man responds to the clerk's hand on his shoulder with an open-hand strike that sends the clerk flying.
In the car Mel starts reading the stranger the riot act over his odd behavior, and he responds using random phrases learned in the convenience store. When something grabs his attention he forces Mel to pull the car over and leaves. Despite everything, Mel wishes him luck as he goes.
Appearing to be looking for something the man ducks through a hole in a board fence onto a train track. Bringing his hand near the track, the track begins to glow. He then proceeds to wait calmly as a train barrels down on top of him. At the last moment he waves his hand, and time appears to slow to a crawl. Stepping out of the way of the train, time resumes its normal pace and he begins to walk towards the Chicago skyline.
In an alleyway the man walks straight through yellow police tape and up to a chalk outline of a body. Placing his hand near the outline there is again a glow, and lying down in the outline the entire outline flashes. He is then confronted by a plain-clothes policeman who asks for i.d. and a name. When the cop (Det. Bruno) insists on his name, the stranger flashes back to Mel talking in the car, and says "Cole". Det. Bruno is then called away by his radio.
At the Watchfire a gay pub crawl leaves just after Mel arrives. As the last men leaves Cole walks in, and is immediately approached by Jess. He introduces himself, and says he needs i.d. Mel pulls him to one side and, after he repeats his request for i.d, says she'll make him a meal and then call social services.
Upstairs, during the meal, we learn that Mel inherited both the Watchfire and Jess from her grandmother. Cole says "air conditioning", in a tone indicating his dislike, and then says he "Must find Rhee". Pointing to a report of a murder on television, Cole says that Rhee "takes life". Indicating himself, Cole indicates that he "don't take life." Mel is relieved by this.
At an apartment, the strange woman in the tow truck messes with a lamp and a stereo. The cut implies that this is the "Rhee" Cole was talking about. Moving to a jewelry box a bracelet literally flies into her hand. Initially puzzled by makeup, she is putting on lipstick when confronted by a fellow who is obviously her pimp. Oddly, she doesn't seem to recognize him, but seems intrigued by his description of a "date" that "likes it rough."
Back at the Watchfire Jess and Mel are arguing over liquor supplies when Cole, once again only in his underwear, enters the bar from upstairs, asking for "more corn." Mel forces him into an overcoat and takes him back upstairs, explaining that he needs to wear clothes. Mel then gives him some clothes from her ex-boyfriend and tells him he has to leave, saying he needs more help than she can give. Placing his hand on top of Mel's hand while taking the clothes, a glow passes between the two. Not noticing the glow, but obviously feeling something, Mel reconsiders and tells Cole he can stay for "one night". Showing him to the spare room she heads to bed.
Back on the street the now poorly-made-up Rhee is admiring a car when confronted by the pimp. We learn the "date" is dead, and Rhee then proceeds to strangle the pimp after he threatens her.
At the Watchfile Mel is heading to the bathroom in her robe when she notices a very bright light coming from the spare room. Asking if everything is all right she enters, and is nearly blinded before the light vanishes. Inquiring about the light, Cole merely stares at her until she leaves. In his hands are two floating objects, a cube and a pyramid.
At the Watchfire the next morning, Mel is talking about how odd Cole is with Jess when Jess first learns that Mel found Cole on Highway 88. Jess then informs Mel of a murder in that area. While Jess doesn't think Cole is a murderer, she does think it's odd. While this is going on, Cole, again wearing only underwear, wanders into the bar behind them and takes a microwave. He explains that "I need to read thermal patterns," showing that his command of English continues to improve. Mel tells Jess that she needs to talk to "Vic" about all this.
"Vic" is Detective Bruno from earlier. Mel meets him at a crime scene, and we learn that the Watchfire was a cop bar when Mel's grandmother ran it and that Mel has a police scanner from those days. Asking Vic to talk, Mel is startled to see Cole standing near the police tape. Vic asks to talk later, and Mel agrees. Meanwhile, Cole has vanished. Mel and Vic obviously have a history.
Back in the spare room, Mel confronts Cole, wondering how he got to the crime scene so quickly. Cole has cannibalized a large number of electronics into custom gear. He explains that Rhee likes to kill, and secretes a hormone when *HE* gets excited that can be measured. All of this convinces Mel that Cole is a government agent, deep undercover. She asks him if he is, and he simply says yes. He needs Mel's help to catch Rhee though.
On the road, Cole's tracking system puts he and Mel directly behind Rhee, who is in the car she was admiring the night before. There is a terrified \woman beside her, and when Rhee notices the pursuit, she kills the woman by snapping her neck. Cole uses a jolt from his finger to improve the speed of Mels car. The chase ends, however, when Mel's engine blows. Rhee turns around and guns her car towards the other, looking to ram it.
Once again, time slows. Cole gets out of the car and manages a flying kick that knocks Rhee's car off course. Winded, Cole lies on the ground while Mel leaves the car and attempts to call for help on her cell. Looking up, Mel sees Rhee approaching and turns to run.
Jumping in front of a slow moving car, Mel convinces the business type inside that her life is in danger and he lets her in. The two speed off. The distraction, meanwhile, has allowed Cole to recover. The two begin to fight.
During the fight, Rhee refers to Cole as "Tracker". Both combatants demonstrate super-human powers during the fight. We learn that Rhee took a human lifeforce upon arrival on Earth (hence the gender swap) and that doing so gave him a much superior command of the language and customs. We also learn that Rhee killed Cole's wife and daughter.
The fight ends with Cole knocking out Rhee with a pipe and then using a silver device to extract energy from her body. Rhee collapses, unconscious or dead.
The next scene is Cole back at the site of the vortex. A voice calls out that "I was really hoping you (Cole) wouldn't feel the energy of the escapees' lifeforces." It is the business type that Mel drove off with.
He and Cole start a conversation, in which we learn that the business type is named Zin. Although Cole considered him a friend, Zin was the one who arranged Rhee's escape as a test of the wormhole. (The vortex mentioned above.) Zin then arranged for a lot of other escapes... 218 to be exact. Zin reminds Cole of an old saying "Never trust a Vaardian" and mentions how it's unfortunate for his planet that he was not a particularly appreciated scientist. Mel (still in the car with Zin) is understandably confused by all this. Zin then threatens to kill Mel if Cole doesn't return through the wormhole before it collapses.
Cole appears to consider it before trying to rush Zin. He blasts Cole with energy that sends Cole flying, then touches Mel and makes her collapse. He dumps her out of the car and drives off.
Cole recovers and goes to Mel. He tries to restart her heart with his powers, and cries for the first time when he thinks he's failed. Mel wakes up, and explains crying to him. He again tells her that he needs her help.
In a train station, Zin awaits the arrival of a train from Bloomington Indiana on platform 9. A number of the passengers acknowledge him as they go by. These are the people have been possessed by the escapees, just as Rhee possessed the prostitute. The scene then cuts to Cole, carrying Mel down the road. He says how "They are here. I can feel them. I have to find them, Mel."
The tag scene is at the Watchfire, where Mel is explaining to Jess that Cole will be staying with them a while, upstairs. Upstairs, Cole presses the silver device he used on Rhee to a platter filled with metal spheres. A burst of energy enters the platter, and ends with one of the spheres glowing red.
