Having met his old girlfriend Shirley at the hospital and arranged for them to have lunch, Jack Frost's day gets off to a bad start when he happens to be in a bank when someone decides to rob it. The investigation of DC Tim Fox's murder continues and Frost has arrested DI Mark Newcombe, who was having an affair with Fox's wife, Helen. He claims that she killed her husband accidentally in an argument and he just helped her cover it up. Frost is starting to have second thoughts about the case. Elsewhere, the case of the cat killer takes on a new twist when an animal owner not only has her dog shot but someone then cuts the breaks on her car resulting in a major accident. She worked at the local power plant where a worker recently fell to his death and Frost begins to wonder if there might be a connection. He's put PC Susan Kavanagh, a computer expert, in charge of finding any patterns to the animal killings and realizes, he hopes not too late, that he may have put her in grave danger. Did You Know?

[Frost and Shirley are having a blazing row]
Shirley Fisher: You want the shoulder to cry on. You want the sex. But you don't want to give *anything* in return. You're scared.
DI Jack Frost: [shouts] What the *hell* did you expect? What did you want? Me as I am? No? What then? Some nine-till-fiver who doesn't give a toss about his job? Someone who just wants to come home, go shopping and have a curry every Friday night? Did you think I've *ever* been that? Do think it's just lacking a good woman that keeps me working all hours...

These kinds of shows really work best when the bad guy is really a bad guy. Here we have one of the worst. As Frost looks for the murderer of a husband, he continues to look into the activities of his estranged wife. We also get another look at the psychotic power plant worker who uses his colleague and toady to do his bidding, by his constant haranguing on his shortcomings. The young detective who has been looking into the deaths of cats and dogs begins to try to outshine Frost who cuts her off all the time. He knows she's good but doesn't like that if she reaches the position he is in, she will meet the dregs of humanity. There is a great chase scene and an ending much like the HItchcock film "Saboteur." Very fine two part offering.
