Hamton goes wild

'Tiny Toon Adventures' often went for the two or more segments structure in its episodes, and there are a fair share of well done and more ones out there, "Tiny Toon Music Television" being a prime example. There are episodes that did centre around a full length single story, some fine ones in this regard such as "Fields of Honey" and "Her Wacky Highness". Hamton is not one of my favourite characters from the show, but he's amiable enough when well written and he and Plucky have always been a good partnership.

"Hog-Wild Hamton" is a very good 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episode and a good representation of Hamton (who usually fares better as a supporting character rather than a lead). It has a premise that plays to his and the show's strengths and is a lot of fun. It is not on the same level as "A Looney Beginning", "Her Wacky Highness" and "Fields of Honey" when it comes to single story structured episodes, but there is nothing here that disgraces the show or the characters.

It is at its weakest in my view with Egghead Jr and the ending. Egghead Jr struck me as annoying somewhat and not that necessary to the plot, his situation actually could have been a rootable one as wild parties are very disruptive but then the episode had to go and exaggerate his negative qualities and make him very difficult to root for.

Didn't care massively for the ending, which was pretty mean-spirited and extreme. From my experience, most disturbed neighbours don't behave to that degree. Sympathy is entirely with Hamton here.

A lot of good things can be seen here in "Hog-Wild Hamton" though. The animation is great, as far as 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes go this is for me among the best animated. Luscious, beautifully drawn and imaginative throughout, especially later on when things get wilder. The music is dynamic and characterful as always and the theme song has always brought a smile to my face. Something that was the case when a child and still is now. Much of the humour is sharp and has a nice wacky wit, helped by that the premise is one that suits that style of humour and the show's tone like a glove.

While the story is on the slight side, it has a lot of energy and didn't feel dull. The character chemistry also lifts it, especially between Hamton and Plucky (always a great pairing reminiscent of Daffy and Porky in the classic Looney Tunes cartoons). Hamton isn't bland here and has a premise that plays to his strengths as a character rather than exposing any weaknesses. The rest of the regulars are spot on, as is the voice acting from some of the best and most prolific voice actors in the business at the time.

Concluding, very well done and a lot of fun. 8/10
