European hilarity
TheLittleSongbird24 February 2020
It is very hard to not want to see "Europe in 30 Minutes". It had such a fun-sounding concept, not novel in animation and unlike what 'Tiny Toon Adventures' had done before up to this point of its run. But one of the concepts for the show that on first watch when younger didn't make me feel initially iffy on paper and instead grabbed my attention straightaway. My feelings a couple of decades on have still not changed and actually appreciate 'Tiny Toon Adventures' and the episode even more now.

What also makes me like "Europe in 30 Minutes" even more was seeing/hearing that the great Tim Curry voiced in it. Was not hugely familiar with Curry when younger other than some of his 90s voice work without cottoning on who he was until a bit later. Since secondary school though Curry has been up there with my all-time favourites and there is good reason as to why his voice work is so highly regarded, in this regard he is/was (having suffered a stroke so his workload has sadly significantly lessened) one of the best in the business in particularly villain roles. Back onto talking about "Europe in 30 Minutes" properly as an episode. For me, it is one of the best, most rewatchable and funniest individual story episodes and one of my favourites of 'Tiny Toon Adventures'. It is a little less than 30 minutes of colourful non-stop hilarity that gets better with each watch.

"Europe in 30 Minutes" is ingeniously funny throughout, with witty razor sharp dialogue and imaginative sight gags that became funnier and more noticeable with each watch. It makes the most of its concept, making it even cleverer and colourful than it sounded on paper and far from squandering it like some films/episodes with great premises have done. It has tremendous energy, everything coming fast ans furious and a lot happening without feeling hectic. Remarkable for such a short length.

The sights and landmarks are so much fun to spot and evoke much affectionate nostalgia. Anybody who's been to any of the places featured will find this a delight, yet thankfully "Europe in 30 Minutes" doesn't feel like a travelogue, or a series of sights strung together with little narrative (which there is plenty of here and so energetically done). There is even a Princess Diana subplot that is handled surprisingly tastefully.

Furthermore the animation is vibrant and beautifully detailed and the music hasn't lost any of its usual character. The theme tune is very difficult to resist. All the regular characters are on top form and are true to character and personality-filled. Plucky especially, Hamton is also fine here though he is not one of my favourites from the show. Cannot fault the voice acting from some of the best and most prolific voice actors at that time, most voicing more than one character. Joe Alaskey of the main voices is particularly delightful and Curry gives one of the better guest star turns of the show, particularly as Reginald.

Overall, a brilliant episode. 10/10

Absolutely Hilarious

There truly was genius at work in those days. The animation was bright and entertaining, the characters engaging, and the plot lines priceless. Case in point: this gem, which features the main Tiny Toons characters on a tour of Europe. While traveling through England, they come upon sinister plans against the monarchy. Our heroes sail through the situation in true Tiny Toons style, inimitably and with maximum amusement to the audience. Watch for the portrayals of Charles and Diana, as well as an interesting theory on what happens when one loses weight. I do so wish that this and other Tiny Toons episodes were released on DVD. They are a treasure that should be enjoyed anew, by children and adults alike.
