THIS MAN DAWSON – The Assassin - 1959

This is episode 2 of the 1959-60 Police series, THIS MAN DAWSON. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. Keith Andes headlines the series about an Ex-Military Officer hired to run a big city Police Department. The city is never named. Each episode starts and finishes with William Conrad doing the narration of the night's story.

The mob is not the least happy with Police Chief Keith Andes success in closing down their operations. They decide to send in their best heavy. The man, Brad Dexter, is an old school thug who believes that plenty of lead applied to the target's head will cure any problems.

Dexter flies into town and makes no attempt to hide the fact. He checks into a high end hotel and meets with local gambling boss, Jay Adler. The Police are of course curious why a big eastern mob type is visiting the city. They put a tail on Dexter night and day but Dexter does nothing that could get him pinched.

The Police manage to get some intelligence from the Chicago Police department that Dexter is there to arrange a hit on a high profile target. As it so happens, a big wig from the State Capital is coming to town to make a speech. The mob figures that a killing this big will make Andes look bad.

Andes has his head of detectives, John Marley, put together a protection detail for the State big wig. Andes figures he is on the right track when Dexter throws off his tail and disappears. Dexter meets with another out of town hitter, L.Q.Jones, and gives him the poop on when and where to pull the hit. Dexter then heads back for the hotel where he plans to make sure the Police see him. That will of course give him an alibi.

Andes has the airport where the State official is arriving, staked out, rightly picking the most likely spot for an assassination attempt. When Jones makes his move, he is quickly given a severe overdose of lead poisoning. The State guy is saved and makes it to his speech. Andes and the boys gobble up Dexter and gambler Jay Adler for some forceful q and a. Adler breaks and spills about the mob play. Dexter is going away for a long time.
