In an author's note on the script, writer Ron Bishop says that a trick played by Temple Houston on another character was based on "an actual frontier circumstance." In the scene, Houston, locked in a jail cell without his gun, fools his would be killer into believing he has a gun by pressing his thumb and index finger on a peanut shell while his hand is hidden under a blanket.
