Bobby Darin's version almost comes to life
31 March 2008 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Clementine, played by Shelly Duvall in a fat suit, is the daughter of a coal miner (Ed Asner). Every day she goes down to the mine to bring him lunch, and also to flirt with her boyfriend, Levi Strauss, who wants to make it out of the coal mines, and open a clothing factory in San Francisco. One tragic day, Clementine's cow breaks loose, and heads towards the mine. The wooden, rickety bridge can only hold so much weight, but Clementine is determined to save her cow. Before Pa and Levi can help, the bridge collapses, and poor Clementine is swept away. Pa takes everything in stride, but not Levi. He still loves her, and in her memory will indeed build that factory.
