Quotes

Narrator: This is Lincoln, New Mexico Territory in 1880 as seen through the eyes of one man. His name was Pat Garrett. He was an officer of the law. He was a man who never backed down from anything or anyone in his life. He had only one weakness - his love for a half-wild boy who he regarded almost as a brother. The boy was William H. Bonney - known as Billy the Kid - and Pat Garrett knew how it must end for one of them if their friendship ever failed.

THE TALL MAN – Garrett and the Kid – 1960

This western series starring Barry Sullivan and Clu Gulager is a fictionalized set of stories about Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. The series ran for 75 episodes between 1960 and 1962. This particular episode is the first of the series.

Pat Garrett (Barry Sullivan) is a Deputy Marshall for Lincoln County. He is called in to see about the criminal activities in an outlying town. The town is going through a boom as gold has been discovered nearby.

The town Sheriff, Denver Pyle, and pretty while everyone in town works for saloon and gambling joint owner, Robert Middleton. Middleton has this part down pat as he played the exact same role in the 1956 western, THE PROUD ONES with Robert Ryan.

Sullivan arrests the man for several deeds but he always gets off. Witnesses etc have a funny way of disappearing with the help of the crooked Pyle. The town Judge, Vaughan Taylor, is willing to play along with Sullivan it trying to curb Middleton reign of terror.

Sullivan arrests Middleton for everything in the books. Spitting on the street, and every other law is used to slowly push Middleton into losing his cool. Sullivan figures Middleton will pull a big one soon. Then Garrett and the Judge can send him away.

Middleton has had enough and brings in a couple of hired guns to bushwhack Sullivan. This idea fails because Billy the Kid, Clu Gulager, hits town and saves the day. Middleton goes for his own gun but is not able to outdraw Sullivan. The crooked Sheriff, Pyle, also collected some unwanted lead for his troubles.

A sharp looking episode with the three time Oscar nominated, and one time winner, Lionel Lindon, handling the cinematography duties.
