"It's going to take a lot more than a lesbian Vampire biker whore to ruin my day." 30 Days of Night, Crypt style.

Tales from the Crypt: Comes the Dawn is set in the snowy Alaskan wilderness in a small town where two ex-military men Colonel Parker (Michael Ironside) & Sergeant Burrows (Bruce Payne) are on an illegal hunt for a Grizzly Bear which will fetch big money on the black market. They hire local girl Jeri Drumbeater (Vivian Wu) as a scout to assist them in the hunt relying on her local knowledge, however instead of leading Parker & Burrows to a Grizzly Bear she double crosses them & leads them into a ghoulish trap as the hunters become the hunted...

This Tales from the Crypt story was episode 13 from season 6, directed by John Herzfeld this is a pretty good horror themed thirty odd minutes & one of the better instalments from a variable sixth season. The script by producer Scott Nimerfro was based on a story from 'The Haunt of Fear' comic book & the thing that immediately stood out about Comes the Dawn is that it's basically a thirty minute version of the recent horror hit 30 Days of Night (2007) with the main difference being that the revelation that there is no sunlight during the Alaskan day for a couple of months is used as the twist ending as the 'hero' thinks he just has to stay alive until the sun comes up but then gets the shock that there is no sunlight for weeks. The other big difference is that this was made over a decade before the recent Hollywood effort. Comes the Dawn is pretty good but there's a fair bit of exposition & I'd have liked a bit more incident.

As usual this is well made with good production values. The opening shot is pretty cool & done in one long take. The Cryptkeeper sequences are a little silly as he sits around sunbathing with a pretty blonde babe sat next to him! There could have been a bit more gore in this considering the subject matter, there are some Vampires, a severed Grizzly Bear head & dead animal carcasses but not much else & it cuts away just as Parker & Burrows are about to get their comeuppance. The acting is fine, Michael Ironside is always watchable.

Comes the Dawn is a decent enough Tales from the Crypt episode & one of the better entries from the sixth season, not to be confused with the similar titled Tales from the Crypt episode Came the Dawn from the previous season.
