Witness in Chinatown
searchanddestroy-19 March 2020
It is very surprising to see Cloris Leachman playing in this story. But don't forget that she began acting back in 1946, and she stills acts in 2020. More than eighty years of career. Making a Caucasian actress as an Asian is always very difficult for the convincing reasons, but her play is here more than convincing as the big boss's daughter. However the story it self is a rather foreseeable and flat. Asian or Chinese atmosphere is well made and I guess the anti Red fashion from this period, early fifties, explains that, to emphasize on the brutality that could emerge from this part of the world under communist regime. Short action scenes are very lousy. A man shoots another one thru a window and the glass doesn't even break !!!

Cloris Leachman is terrific!

In this well-scripted thriller, Cloris Leachman is cast as the daughter of a Chinaman who's being questioned by a Congressional committee regarding the rackets in Chinatown, and she serves as dad's translator. With makeup effects on her eyes I didn't recognize her right away, but later on her mannerisms and especially her mouth movements identified her as the Cloris Leachman we all know and love.

It's a wonderful performance, playing a damsel in distress and never stepping out of character. You can't complain about her being cast in the role instead of signing a Chinese actress, and the proof is right there, as Robert H. Harris, who overacted playing an evil Communist Chinese general in another "Suspense" episode, is unconvincing as the Chinese villain, who even gets violent with Cloris mid-way through the show.

It's a strong segment, including some nifty twists inserted in the eventful climactic moments, as the mystery of the identity of "the juiceman" (the go-between passing bribe money and info between the criminals) is solved.
