"Let's just say I'd like to know if he could tell the difference between an Apache and a Yaqui."

With the second season of Stories of the Century under way, it appears that actress Kristine Miller replaced Mary Castle as an assistant to Railroad Detective Matt Clark (Jim Davis). Her character is Margaret 'Jonesy' Jones, and having seen her in just a couple of episodes, it appears that she had a more appealing personality than Castle. Otherwise her role in the stories seems to be just about the same in backing up Clark with preparatory work on his cases to track down infamous desperadoes of the Old West.

The Apache Kid in this story is portrayed by Kenneth Alton, and I have to say he really looked the part of a renegade warrior. Starting out however, he's a Cavalry scout with a rank of Master Sergeant reporting to Army Chief of Scouts Al Sieber (Kenneth MacDonald). Historically there's some accuracy to this episode, but as usual, a great deal of liberty is taken as well.

Following an altercation at Fort Wachusa, The Kid kidnaps a Mexican girl named Tonia (Pilar Del Ray) and heads for the border to escape arrest. A posse consisting of Matt Clark, Jonesy Jones and Al Sieber follows the Kid into Mexico and has him pinned down in a cave. The Apache, stabbed by Tonia when she tried to leave her captor, finds a way out of the cave and tries to escape by climbing a cliff. However his wound is too severe and he falls to his death after losing his grip on the rocks. Sieber, who had a close relationship with the Apache Kid, is willing to leave things be rather than go through the ordeal of explaining his presence in Mexico to his superiors, and on that note the story closes with all involved sharing their secret.

Historically, the death of the Apache Kid remains a mystery. It's commonly accepted that he died around 1894, but sightings continued well into the 1900's throughout the Southwest. Stories of the Century seemed to take this into account with the way the episode ended here.
