Stoney working at the chute when Cody Bristol's champion rider brother is stomped to death is blamed by Cody for his brother's death. He accuses Stoney of letting it happen to increase Stoney's chances as champion. Neither Cody's dad nor his sister blame Stoney. Stoney, a rising star, is encourage by his 'best' friend Ves Painter to get an agent. After Stoney fights and defeats Cody in a parking lot fist fight, telling Cody you know that it was an accident, the agent takes him on. Stoney goes to the Bristol ranch and falls in love with Cody's sister. Who is engaged to another champion rider. When Stoney tries to buy their best horse the sister refuses--seemingly to get Stoney's attention. Soon after Cody's father warns his daughter that she should leave Stoney alone--because if she does not it will ruin her fiancé's chances of becoming champion. Stoney is then hurt by Megaton. The agent drops him. Ves leaves Stoney and works for the agent. When Stoney starts to recover he goes to the Bristol ranch and though Cody is still angry with Stoney, E. J. Stocker convinces Cody to let Stoney ride. Even Cody is impressed with Stoney's riding saying his brother could never ride like that. With obvious feelings for each other Stoney and the Cody's sister agree not to see each other. Ves tries to get back into Stoney's good graces but Stoney does not easily forgive him. After a last ride at the Bristol ranch Stoney leaves to go back to the circuit and Cody and E. J. join him.
