This episode features the first (and only) time we see the oft-mentioned sonic shower in action.
It is not explained how Voyager encountered the Malon, tens of thousands of light years from where they were first encountered in Night (1998) and Extreme Risk (1998). The previous encounters with the Malon were before Voyager used the slipstream drive in "Timeless" and the transwarp coil in Dark Frontier (1999) to cover the distance that would have normally taken twenty-five years to cover at normal warp speeds. Either Malon ships are faster, which is unlikely considering their less advanced technology, or they have access to another subspace vortex, like the one seen in "Night."
B'Elanna's grade classmate from when she was a child, Daniel Bird, has the same name as Harry Kim's classmate from Starfleet Academy who took his place on Voyager in Non Sequitur (1995).
The title refers to a term used to describe a literal or metaphorical force regarded as unstoppable such as a large machine, group of people, organization or mythical creature. It is a corruption of Jagganath, the Hindu "Lord of the Universe."
