Dr. Crusher is suspended and faces dismissal after taking the side of Ferengi scientist Dr. Reyga to persuade an inter-race research panel to allow a colleague to test his invention, the "metaphasic shield", during a shuttle flight into a star's extremely dangerous corona. After Dr. Crusher declares him dead, although quite unfamiliar with his race's physiology, Reyga dies too, in an on-board test of his invention. After consulting Data on the technology involved, Crusher suspects Reyga was killed by sabotage; realizing several fellow panel members had both motive and opportunity, she tries to find out if the shuttle accident was also sabotage, and if so who committed it... At the start of the first test Data states the external hull temperature is "zero point nine-million Kelvins and rising". This is wrong in several respects. Decimals less than one are stated with each digit, so something like 0.945 would be stated as "zero point nine, four, five". What Data stated would be identical to "zero point nine" unless Data meant 9 millionths of a degree Kelvin, which would be zero point zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero nine" The other error here is that the temperature of the microwave background is currently about 3 Kelivs., meaning that an object in space with no other heat source will be 3 degrees K, meaning the hull is 2.1 degrees cooler than it should be. Doctor Beverly Crusher: [after her door has chimed twice] All right, come in!
[Guinan enters]
Doctor Beverly Crusher: Guinan. What's wrong?
Guinan: I need a doctor. Geordi beat me in straight sets today; I think I've developed tennis elbow.
Doctor Beverly Crusher: Well, you'd better go to sickbay. I think Dr. Selar is on duty.
Guinan: I don't wanna see Dr. Selar, I always see you. I'm very particular about my doctors.
Doctor Beverly Crusher: Well, you'd better get a new one, because I'm not a doctor on this ship anymore.

A Ferengi Scientist????
1 October 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Beverly Crusher meets with Guinan to spill her guts about what has happened to her in the preceding day. Things are now told in flashback. A Ferengi scientist (who would normally not have been taken seriously) has supposedly developed a method of protecting the crew of a ship as it enters the corona of a star. The alien who pilots the ship is killed in the process and the Ferengi is discredited by the other scientists on board to observe. However, it isn't long before the big eared alien is himself killed. As is often the case, Beverly goes overboard and performs an autopsy, against the wishes of the family. She has put herself in a position of destroying her career in Star Fleet as well as in the medical profession. She is a complex character because there is no one so adamant about correct and fair treatment of patients. Anyway, she manages to alienate the guests and bring disgrace on herself. In order to clear her name, Guinan suggests that she find a way, no matter the risk. So she takes out a shuttle craft to investigate the forces that affected the original probe into the star's outer layer. It's a mystery story and it works pretty well.
