  • The shuttle bringing Troi back to the Enterprise from an individual mission crashes on a near-unknown planet. It was presumed uninhabited, but shows atypical, life-like activity. Riker leads an away-team, including Data, which discovers the shuttle is controlled and access barred by a shape-shifting, oily slick of hostile, almost sadistic nature, with immense powers. Attempts to pass it cause Riker to be temporarily swallowed, Yar to be killed. Picard beams down to take command while Deana works out it's acting out of deep frustration, which they must tap into.

  • While en route back to the Enterprise, the shuttle craft carrying Counselor Troi loses power and gets caught in a planet's gravity well, where, with the pilot severely injured, she encounters the real reason why she's stranded on the planet: a large pool of oil, able to assume many forms and capable of great power, and sentient, but very evil in nature.

  • Capt. Picard and the Enterprise must rescue Counselor Troi and another crewman when her space shuttle is forced to crash land on a nearby planet. An unknown type of creature, in the form of a pool of oil, is preventing anyone from the Enterprise reaching the shuttle. It soon becomes apparent that the creature is evil and takes pleasure in inflicting physical and emotional pain on the captured crew and the landing party. For Picard, rescuing Troi and the crewman is essential, but it will come at a very high cost when one of the Enterprise's senior officers does not survive.
