- Three children, who attend school aboard the Enterprise, win the top prizes in the science fair, earning themselves a tour of the great ship by Captain Picard. They are Marissa Flores (Erika Flores), Jay Gordon Grass (John Christian Graas) and Patterson Supera (Max Supera). Patterson wants to visit the battle bridge and torpedo bays, but Picard keeps them to the science labs only. Meanwhile Keiko, Mile's wife, is preggers.
When the Enterprise strikes a quantum filament, the resulting collision causes massive destruction throughout the ship. Computer is down. Ship has impulse power but nothing else. Communications are down.
Various groups of crew members - including the captain and the children - have to work together to overcome their precarious situations. Picard is stuck in the lift with the kids. Picard has a broken foot. Plus, one of the side struts of the turbo lifts is broken, and as such it will fall. Picard wants the kids to climb up a ladder inside the shaft to reach the exit doorways. Marissa tells Picard that the kids have decided to stay together. They all go, or they all stay. Picard fashions a harness out of optical wires and they all climb the escape ladder, before the lift destabilizes and falls. Picard also sings a climbing song to keep the kids busy and occupied. They reach an exit door and climb out.
The bridge is isolated. Ensign Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) manages to escape from a turbo lift and enters the bridge. Deanna is the senior most officer on the bridge and is in command of the bridge. Beverly and Geordi are stuck in the cargo bay. They notice a plasma fire started inside the bulkheads which is emitting a high degree of radiation. They are carrying Poladum in cargo, which explodes when exposed to radiation. They have 4 hours. Geordi comes up with a plan to open the bay door to space, which will suck out the oxygen and kill the fire and yank out the Poladum containers into deep space. But they will need a place to hang on which the bay doors open and close. They manage to pull it off and re-pressurize the bay before falling unconscious.
Data and Riker are in the bar. They try to find a way out through the engineering vents. But they face a coolant leak behind them and an electrical field ahead of them and are trapped. Data suggests using his body to disrupt the current but suggests that Riker remove his head so that Data can later help Riker to gain control of the ship, in case the computer is not working.
Ro finds that the quantum filament changed the polarity of the ship and as such the anti-matter containment field around the warp engines are impacted. They are at 40%, and at 15% the field collapses. At below 15%, the anti-matter comes in contact with the matter and the ship explodes.
Ro Laren recommends separating the saucer section and using impulse power to move away from it before it explodes. Deanna decides to divert power to engineering section so that they can work on the problem. Ro Laren doubts anyone is alive in the section and hence this is a waste of time. Deanna tells Ro that they will not leave unless she says so. Meanwhile Riker and Data (head only) reach engineering. Riker hooks up Data to the computer in the engineering section and he brings the containment field to stabilize before it collapses. The ship is saved
Keiko goes into labor. Worf is on delivery duty. Worf delivers the baby and it's a girl. The ship goes to a star base for repairs.
