Picard's team has been lured to the Cardassian planet Celtris III's fake biological weapon-installation where he is captured and interrogated at the threat of death and truth-drugged. The Enterprise's present Captain Edward Jellico believes the negotiations with the Cardassians are heading for war, especially now Picard's failed intrusion is reported by the scandalized Cardassians. Picard is stripped naked and suspended by the wrists for a thirsty night before torture by a pain-inducing implant made with a geminite knife. The Cardassians prove to Jellico that Picard is captured but deny the agent POW status, so he will suffer a terrorist's fate unless the Federation admits starting a war or retreats from the sector. After scanning the Cardassian ship for indications where they were, Jellico, Data and Geordi guess right Picard was tricked to betray the Federation defense plans for Minos Kordas and get permission to make a bold countermove, requiring best pilot Riker, who openly ... While Frank Abatemarco got the writing credit, the entire script was virtually written by Jeri Taylor, with a last minute polish by Ronald D. Moore. See more »

When Madred tells Picard "the Enterprise is burning in space", he probably uses a figure of speech rather than the literal meaning of "burning". See more »

Gul Madred: I remember the first time I ate a live taspar. I was six years old and living on the streets of Lakat. We slept together in doorways, like packs of wild gettles, for warmth. Once I found a nest. Taspars had mated and built a nest in the eave of a burned-out building. And I found three eggs in it. Captain Picard gets tortured...
28 November 2014 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

This is the second part of a two-part adventure involving the Cardassians--the new villains for the spin-off series, "Star Trek: Deep Space 9". It begins with Captain Picard in custody after a screwed up mission falls apart. Now the Cardassians are going to torture him to try to get him to betray secrets. At the same time, the Enterprise's new captain, Jellico (Ronnie Cox), is trying to somehow take a total screw-up and turn it into a Federation victory...something which seems impossible.

This is a gritty episode and much of it consists of Picard stripped naked and being tortured. There is some nudity but it isn't gratuitous and the show is very compelling--and occasionally tough to watch.
