This is the first episode where it shows Rom may be a lot smarter than most people think, and that he is in fact possessed of a great deal of mechanical/technical knowledge and expertise.
When Odo is questioning Vaatrik Pallra he goes to leave the room, stops, turns around and says "One more thing" before asking her another question. He also says the phrase "All part of a routine investigation." Both phrases are a homage to the show Columbo, numerous episodes of which were written by Peter Allan Fields, the writer of this DS9 episode.
A scene was deleted from the third act that revealed that Pallra (Katherine Moffat) was having an affair with Dukat (Marc Alaimo). Alaimo was irked that this scene wherein he kisses Moffat was cut.
Not only was Rom's technical knowledge revealed, changes in his character also began to emerge. Max Grodenchik's delivery of dialogue was noticeably different from his appearances in earlier episodes, changing from a much sharper and icy style towards a smoother, more pleasant delivery with somewhat humorous overtones.
