- Kirk and the Enterprise computer become detectives after Scotty is accused of murdering women on a pleasure planet.
- While on shore leave on the planet Argelius II with Dr. McCoy and Captain Kirk, Chief Engineer Scott finds himself accused of murdering an exotic dancer he met in a nightclub. He has no recollection of the incident but is found standing over the girl with a bloody knife in his hand. For Mr. Hengist, the chief administrator, the case is cut and dried, but Jaris, the planet's leader, suggests that his wife chair a séance to identify the killer. Tragedy strikes again, still pointing to Mr. Scott as the culprit. Kirk suggests they retire to the Enterprise where they can use its computers to determine if Scott is lying and who the real culprit may be.—garykmcd
- On Dr. McCoy's orders, Mr. Scott joins him and Captain Kirk on shore-leave on Argelius II, where the natives, especially the women, are extremely accommodating. Suddenly they find Mr. Scott shivering with a knife in his hand used to repeatedly stab Kara, a girl whose corpse lies at his feet. The local prefect and Mr. Hengist, a foreigner employed as administrator, lead the murder investigation. The Enterprise beams down a psycho-tricorder to probe Scott's mind, but the murder knife to stir the prefect's empathic wife Sybo is found in the chamber where Scott was to be examined, in his hand- with crew member Lt. Karen Tracy similarly stabbed to death at his feet. The empath senses an ancient devouring evil, but the session is ended by a knife killing her. The investigation beams up to the Enterprise, where the best equipment and computer records produce a surprising lead.—KGF Vissers
- On Dr. McCoy's orders, Mr. Scott joins him and Captain Kirk on shore-leave on Argelius II, where the natives, especially the women, are extremely accommodating. Kirk hooks up Scott with Kara and they leave a cafe, where Kara had been dancing. Suddenly they find Mr. Scott shivering with a knife in his hand used to repeatedly stab Kara (Tanya Lemani), a girl whose corpse lies at his feet. The local prefect Jaris (Charles Macaulay) and Mr. Hengist (John Fiedler), a foreigner (from Rigelius IV) employed as administrator, lead the murder investigation. Scott says he doesn't remember the incident at all. Only his fingerprints are on the murder knife.
The Enterprise beams down a psycho-tricorder (which Lt Tracy brings with her) to probe Scott's mind, but the murder knife to stir the prefect's empathetic wife Sybo (Pilar Seurat) is found in the chamber where Scott was to be examined, in his hand- with crew member Lt. Karen Tracy (Virginia Aldridge) similarly stabbed to death at his feet. Karen was using the tricorder to understand what happened to Scott over the last 24 hrs. Sybo was going to try the ancient Argelian empathetic mind contact to learn the truth from Scott. Sybo is the descendant of the ancient Argelian natives and is trained in their ancient arts. Morla (Charles Dierkop) was at the cafe that night and had watched Kara and SCott leave. Morla was engaged to Kara. He admits that he was jealous of Kara, but that night he left for him.
The Empath senses an ancient devouring evil (Redjac) who hates women, but the session (it was a sense circle with everyone sitting around a fire) is ended by a knife killing her (just as the fire went out and it became pitch black). Again, the blood is on Scott's hands, but this time he didn't black out. Argelius is the only Federation space port in the quadrant and these killings have led to talk amongst the native population to close the space port to any foreigners.
The investigation beams up to the Enterprise, as Kirk convinces Jarvis that his ship has the machines which will prove the matter beyond any shadow of doubt. Under detector Scott claims he doesn't remember the first 2 murders, but when he went to help Sybo (he was sitting next to her), he felt something, cold and smelling bad.. it wasn't a person, but difficult to explain. Marlo says that he didn't kill Sara and he going home at the time of her murder
The computer states that Redjac is an Earth nickname for someone who hates women. But A human could not have survived that long. Spock and Kirk further question the computer and ascertain that such an evil entity could exist as a mass of energy and is capable of taking a humanoid form. They also learn that all the locations where mass murders of women have taken place lie exactly Argelius and Earth. One of those planets was Rigel IV. Hengist comes from Rigel IV and is asked to take the stand. Hengist refuses and an analysis of the knife reveals that it too belongs to Rigel IV. Hengist tries to escape but Kirk knocks him out with a single punch
McCOy says Hengist is dead, and they hear Redjac's soul reverberating throughout the Enterprise. Redjac takes over the ship by entering its systems. Kirk orders McCoy to tranquilize the entire ship. His plan it to starve REdjac of the fear, thus forcing it out of the ship's computers. Then Spock occupies the computers by giving them a task to compute the value of Pi. This stops Redjac from using computers resources to do any more harm. Redjac escapes the computer and back into Hengist's body. Spock immobilizes Hengist's body and Kirk transports it out into open space, where it will float forever before the consciousness dies out due to lack of any fear feeding it..
