- Captain Kirk's insane ex-lover Dr. Janice Lester forcibly switches bodies with him in order to take command of the Enterprise.
- In answering a medical emergency at an archaeological expedition, Kirk confronts the deep hatred of an old love, Janice Lester, who supposedly lies severely ill from celebium radiation. In payment for jilting her back at Starfleet Academy, Dr. Lester arranges for an alien machine to swap her consciousness with that of the captain and takes command of the Enterprise. Once aboard, Kirk (in Lester's body) tries to convince Spock that he is trapped in her body. As a result, Janice (in Kirk's body) conducts a court-marshal with the intent of executing Spock and Kirk (in Janice's body), and later McCoy and Scott, to keep her secret. The crew realize something is seriously wrong with their captain and, not wishing to incur an illegal death-penalty themselves, begin a passive resistance.—JW Kearse
- On the planet Camus II, Kirk meets his old flame, Janice Lester, who is supposedly dying of radiation poisoning. She is a woman scorned and is out to get her revenge on Kirk with whom she was in love many years ago. She has discovered an alien process that will allow her to transfer her essence into Kirk's body and vice versa. Returning to the Enterprise in Kirk's body, she now has command of the Enterprise. Kirk on the other hand is now in Lester's body and can get no one to believe that he is really Kirk. It soon becomes obvious that Lester is incapable of command, leading Spock to accept that she has, in fact, taken over Kirk's body.—garykmcd
- In answering a medical emergency at an archaeological expedition (Enterprise received a distress call from a group of scientists on Camus II), Kirk confronts the deep hatred of an old love, Janice Lester (Sandra Smith), who supposedly lies severely ill from Celebium radiation. In payment for jilting her back at Starfleet Academy (and the fact the Starfleet does not induct women into command positions), Dr. Lester arranges for an alien machine to swap her consciousness with that of the captain and takes command of the Enterprise. Dr Coleman (Harry Landers) is Janice's assistant on the expedition and wont tell anyone whats the nature of the radiation that hit Janice. He knows that Janice has swapped with Kirk, and in fact he was instrumental in diverting Spock and McCoy while Janice accomplished her mission.
Janice (in Kirk) tries to kill Kirk (in Janice) by smothering Janice's body but has to step back as Spock and McCoy come back into the room where Kirk (in Janice) was lying. McCoy orders beaming Kirk (in Janice) up to the Enterprise, even though Coleman resists. Janice (in Kirk) orders the landing party plus Coleman & Kirk (In Janice) to be beamed up. Coleman accuses Janice (in Kirk) of sparing Kirk (in Janice) as she loved him. Coleman says that Janice (in Kirk) killed every member of her staff by sending them to areas where the Celebium shielding was weak, but she protected Kirk (in Janice) even though she had the perfect opportunity to kill him. To prevent McCOy from finding the truth, Janice (in Kirk) overrides McCoy's authority and turns over the treatment of Kirk (in Janice) over to Coleman. Janice (in Kirk) tries to steer the Enterprise towards the Benecia colony which has primitive health facilities, while Spock argues that Starbase 2 is on their direct current course and has the latest in medical technology that can treat Kirk (in Janice). Spock also argues that at max speed Enterprise will reach Starbase 2 in the same time as Benecia.
MCCoy meanwhile finds out that Coleman is a certified incompetent and was demoted by star-fleet. He also wants Janice (in Kirk) to submit for a full medical evaluation, as he is displaying emotional instability and incoherent judgment ever since returning from the planet. Kirk (in Janice) manages to escape Dr Coleman and wants to speak with Spock and McCOy. But she is attacked by Janice (in Kirk) who orders no one to speak with Kirk (in Janice) without his permission.
But Spock is intrigued and decides to visit Kirk (In Janice) to figure out what she wanted to say. Kirk (in Janice) tries to convince Spock that he is trapped in her body. Spock uses the mind meld and is convinced that it is Kirk. But Spock knows that he needs concrete evidence to prove that such a consciousness swap indeed took place.
As a result, Janice (in Kirk's body) conducts a court-marshal with the intent of executing Spock and Kirk (in Janice's body) as Spock had tried to break out Kirk (in Janice) from captivity with an intention to take over the Enterprise. Janice (in Kirk) wants to be rid of Kirk (in Janice) and Spock to protect her secret.
Janice (in Kirk) will not allow Kirk (in Janice) to depose during the hearing. All of Spock's evidence is subjective. Spock uses logic to force Janice (in Kirk) to put Kirk (in Janice) on the stand. Kirk (in Janice) plays it cool. She claims that Janice (in Kirk) hated Kirk, and her ambition wanted her to attain the position of a star-ship captain, which she could not attain by temperament or training. Kirk (in Janice) claims that this is ploy by Spock to disqualify Kirk from command, and take over command of the ship himself. Spock refuses to recognize Janice (in Kirk) as Kirk. Janice (in Kirk) loses control and charges Spock with mutiny. He orders a recess, followed by a vote. Spock says that Janice (in Kirk) will use the recess to deposit Kirk (in Janice) on Benecia. This infuriates Janice (in Kirk) even further.
Scotty and McCoy discuss taking over the ship if Janice (in Kirk) retaliates over them voting in favor of Spock. Janice (in Kirk) plays the recorded conversation in the hearing and sentences them both to death on account of mutiny. The crew realize something is seriously wrong with their captain as the death penalty is forbidden and, not wishing to incur an illegal death-penalty themselves, begin a passive resistance.
Meanwhile Spock figures out that the transference can be broken. Janice (in Kirk) realizes that the only way to be captain permanently is to kill Kirk (in Janice), which means that the transference cannot ever be reversed. She takes Coleman to accomplish the task, but before she can, the transference reverses and they go back to their original bodies.
Janice (in Janice) is inconsolable that she will never be captain again.
