- Trapped on a planet whose inhabitants are descended from Northwestern Native Americans, Kirk loses his memory and is proclaimed a God while the crippled Enterprise races back to the planet before it is destroyed by an asteroid.
- Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to a planet that is in the path on an oncoming meteor. They find an idyllic place that is very similar to Earth and whose population is virtually identical to North American Natives. Their visit is meant to be a short one since their mission is to deflect the meteor, still several months away. Before they can return to the ship, Kirk disappears and loses his memory in an accident, forcing Spock to take command of the Enterprise and to leave him behind. On the planet, Kirk is treated like a god when they see him emerge from an obelisk that is actually a deflector beam (which no one remembers how to use, however). When the Enterprise fails to deflect the meteor, they return to the planet only hours before the annihilating meteor's arrival.—garykmcd

Before they can return to the ship, Kirk disappears and loses his memory in an accident (he falls into the well of an obelisk and rendered unconscious, when he was out of sight from McCoy and Spock), forcing Spock to take command of the Enterprise and to leave him behind. He has to, since they cant delay being at the deflection point of the asteroid, beyond which the asteroid may not be deflected (The asteroid is as large as the moon, and now the angle of deflection required is minute, but as it gets closer, the angle required is larger and larger).
On the planet, Kirk is treated like a god when they see him emerge from the obelisk. Miramanee (Sabrina Scharf), is the priestess who sees Kirk and takes him to their leader. Kirk further enhances his reputation when he revives a boy who drowned, via mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The designated medical man Salish (Rudy Solari) of the tribe is offended by the slight as the leader asks him to give his medical badge to Kirk. Salish was supposed to marry Miramanee, but she says she will now serve the God, as per tradition and cannot marry her.
Miramanee tells Kirk about the Wise Ones who brought the people to the planet from far away. They created the temple to protect them when the skies grew dark and gave the instructions to operate it to the Medical man. These instructions were passed from father to son, but Salish's father died before he could pass on the instructions to him.
Spock takes the Enterprise at Warp 9 to the deflection point, and this stresses the engines greatly. The Enterprise reaches the point and uses deflector beams, which fail as engines have already been under a lot of stress due to the warp 9 travel. Spock puts the Enterprise in direct path of the Asteroid and turns on the phaser beams on it in order to destroy it. But the phasers also fail as the engines blow up. When the Enterprise fails to deflect the meteor, Spock orders the Enterprise to limp towards the planet at impulse power, and it will take them 59 days to get there, with the Asteroid 4 hrs behind. Spock begins to study the markings on the obelisk that they encountered on the planet.
On the day of Kirk's wedding to Miramanee, Salish attacks Kirk, but Kirk defeats him. Kirk marries Miramanee and enjoys paradise. 58 days have passed. Miramanee is preggers. as the asteroid approaches the planet, the people expect Kirk to operate the machinery at the temple and save them, but Kirk is exposed as he doesn't know how to. Meanwhile Kirk has figured that the writings on the obelisk are musical notes and that the obelisk is a deflector on the planet, left by a race of preservers who wanted humanoids to grow everywhere in the galaxy. Spock and McCoy beam down to find Kirk and Miramanee under attack by Silash and his goons. Spock uses the mind fusion to cure Kirk and to restore his memory. Spock and Kirk get inside the obelisk and activate the controls to deflect the asteroid. McCoy informs Kirk that Miramanee will not survive her internal injuries. Kirk says a gentle goodbye as she dies.
