Johnny Kelly, a passenger on Luke's stagecoach, objects when Luke stops to tend to a lame horse, claiming that the driver is making he and his wife sitting ducks for outlaws. The argument changes from words to fists to guns and Luke is forced to kill Kelly when the man tries to shoot him in the back. Kelly's widow flees leaving her young daughter in Luke's care.
