Cato and French are captured on their way to Port Moresby by a German patrol. They are after information about Australian troop movements and start to torture Cato. Then a Japanese patrol intervenes and treats them all as enemies.
Cato and French are going to a conference at Port Moresby with the Americans about the redeployment of Australian 9th Division. The Germans use a captured coast watcher's radio to divert the plane to the Solomon's where the plane was destroyed and they are captured by an old rival of Cato's. They arrived by submarine and want the course the troop ships are taking back to Australia from the middle east and their commander is prepared to use torture on Cato to get it.
