Originally conceived as a new season of UFO (1970). The plot would have had the aliens from that series trying to destroy SHADO's moon-base by knocking the moon out of orbit.

Nick Tate was originally cast as Collins. Another actor was originally cast as Nordstrom but became sick after the special milky contact lens had been made- it had to be used for the replacement actor Roy Scammell.

As seen in the opening credits, the nuclear accident that throws the moon out of orbit occurs on August 13th 1999. This day is the only "Friday 13th" of 1999. Historically Friday 13th has always been said to be unlucky. In this year (2015) there are 3 Friday the 13th's.

Ouma was meant to be a series regular but people disliked working with Lon Satton so he was fired.

Filming began at Elstree Studios. As it was under threat of closure, the entire production moved to Pinewood Studios one weekend. All the sets had to be rebuilt. As a result they were blacklisted by the unions.

One of the five series episodes to be adapted by Power Records in the mid-70s as an audio drama for children. The basic plot remained unchanged, though the Comissioner's role in the story is limited to his initial discussion with Koenig about the Meta probe - he does not come to the Moonbase in this version.
