This is one of the few episodes in the entire series where four writers share credit for the script. It's also the last one written by the wife-and-husband team of Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess who left the show to try to develop another HBO series.
The episode title "Live Free Or Die" is the famous motto of the state of New Hampshire, where Vito has taken refuge.
In the scene where Finn confirms Vito's sexual preference, the table and the seating of the crew around the table suggests "The Last Supper" in placement as well as mood ("betrayal" is an oft-repeated suggestion by Christopher, Paulie, and among others).
When Meadow is discussing President Bush, Carmela says, "Well, I voted for him." Edie Falco, who plays Carmela, appeared in a television commercial for Mothers Opposing Bush.
The only episode of the entire series with no violence.
