- An adventure and romantic drama of epic proportions, The Man From Snowy River is the most recognised of all the Banjo Paterson characters and is captured on film in this acclaimed production. Viewers join Matt McGregor 25 years on from his famous ride. A beautiful and independent young widow, Kathleen O'Neil, returns to the district with her son to claim her homestead and Matt, who once held strong feelings for Kathleen, discovers there is still an emotional bond. Danni McGregor secretly enters the electrifying and dangerous Snowy River cross-country race - an annual race created in honour of her father's famous ride years before. Then, a mysterious American appears, determined not only to win the race at any cost, but also to challenge Matt McGregor himself in the original death-filled ride down the mountainside.
- The small town of Paterson's Ridge prepares for its 25th annual horse race, which celebrates a remarkable endurance race, ridden by local legend Matt McGregor ("Andrew Clarke"), better known as 'The Man from Snowy River.' Men arrive from far and wide to compete for a prize: this year's being cattle donated by local landowner Oliver Blackwood (" "). As the festivities begin, feisty widow Kathleen O'Neill ("Wendy Hughes"), a former member of the township, moves back onto the ranch she used to occupy with her husband, before they moved away five years previously. This annoys neighbour Matt McGregor, as he believes that the land had become his, after reverting to Crown property following the long absence of its former tenants. Oliver Blackwood, is similarly opposed to the O'Neil family re-settling their old homestead, and suggests to Matt that they combine forces and drive Kathleen off. However, Matt disagrees with employing such heavy-handed tactics.
Meanwhile, Matt's fourteen-year-old daughter Danni ("Joelene Crnogorac") is frustrated that her father won't allow her to take part in the race, as he fears she might meet the same fate as her late mother, who was killed in a fall from her horse. Despite this, Danni defies Matt and enters the race, pretending that she is registering for Kathleen's son, Michael O'Neill ("Ben Geurens"). The race also draws an entrant from America: a brooding young cowboy called Luke ("Joshua Lucas"), but it seems from the start that he has more than just winning the race on his mind. He soon announces that he is a long-lost relative, the son of Matt's estranged brother Alec, but it's clear that for some unknown reason he has little love for his Australian relations. He gets a job working as a cattle hand for the Blackwoods, and quickly strikes up a friendship with Oliver Blackwood's daughter Victoria ("Amanda Douge").
On the day of the race all goes well at first, with Luke and Matt's son Rob ("Guy Pearce"), who is hotly tipped to win, running neck and neck, but then Rob's horse shies and throws Rob down a ravine, and Luke casts differences aside momentarily in order to help Matt rescue the youngest McGregor son, thus forfeiting his chances in the race, which is won in the end by Danni.
Luke finally admits the truth behind his animosity towards his Australian family, revealing that his father had died a penniless drunk in America, and that he (Luke) holds Matt McGregor responsible for his father's downfall. Accordingly, he swears vengeance.
The issue of Kathleen's claim to her old homestead is settled when Matt donates the cattle Danni won in the race to the O'Neil's, crossing crosses an angry Oliver Blackwood in the process.
